Health and Safety Insurance

Insuring against fines

Under the HSWA Businesses cannot insure against fines. Liability insurance may cover reparations and legal fees but it won’t cover fines. The best form of protection is prevention. Ensuring you have safe systems of work, and an active safety culture will keep your team from getting harmed. If someone does something silly, or someone else’s actions puts you under the microscope, ensuring your health and safety activity is captured is your evidence you have done everything that is reasonably practicable. This is the benefit of health and safety training in the workplace. Northland Safety specialises in implementing best practice safety management systems and easy to use app-based tools to capture your activity. Health & Safety: More Than Just a Box to Tick

At Northland Safety, we believe health and safety is more than meeting legal requirements — it’s about creating a workplace where everyone feels valued, protected, and set up for success.

Yes, compliance matters. But compliance is simply the result of having a well-designed safety management system — not the reason for having one. The true driver should be building a culture where safety is second nature.

Why a Strong Safety Culture Pays Off

When you invest in the safety and wellbeing of your team, you’re investing in much more than compliance — you’re building loyalty, trust, and commitment.

For small businesses, a stable and experienced workforce can make a massive difference to your productivity and bottom line.
Companies known for strong safety cultures attract the best people, keep them longer, and save money and time on recruitment and training.

The message is simple: Look after your people, and they’ll look after your business.

Meeting Your Legal Duties Under the HSWA

Under the Health and Safety at Work Act (HSWA), PCBUs (Persons Conducting a Business or Undertaking) must communicate, cooperate, and coordinate with others on health and safety matters.

A robust, accessible safety management plan not only ensures compliance — it gives other principal contractors confidence in your professionalism and your commitment to safe work practices.

The Cost of Getting It Wrong

Ignoring health and safety obligations can be costly. Significant fines can be issued for breaches of the HSWA — sometimes triggered by the actions of others on site, not just your own team.

If something goes wrong, you must be able to show that you’ve taken all reasonable steps to manage risks — just as an Officer (director, trustee, or owner) of another PCBU would.

A relatively small investment in proper systems can help protect your business from serious legal and financial fallout.  Read about recent fines here:

Your Health & Safety = Your Brand

What would someone think about your business if they judged it only by your health and safety practices?

Fair or not, safety influences how clients, partners, and the public perceive your business.
From how your team works on site, to their interactions with others, to how company vehicles are driven on the road — every interaction tells a story about your brand.

Prioritising safety not only protects your people — it strengthens your reputation, helping your business grow and thrive for years to come.

Stay Safe. Build trust. Protect your team. Secure your future.
